Regular or Premium?

What should I use?
12 Jul 2004

You may be asking yourself this question as you listen to radio commercials and watch TV ads for gas stations.

There are only a few differences between the two types.

  1. Higher octane in premium. (prevents knocking of engine)
  2. Premium grade "may" have more detergents to help clean the engine
  3. cost

Using premium gas with higher octane content will not give you any advantages over regular gas unless your car specifically is designed to run on higher octane levels or you have a high compression engine.

If your car's engine makes knocking sounds as you drive up a hill or tow something, using premium gas may help.  The knocking sound is caused by premature combustion in the engine cylinder and the other higher octane helps to reduce this.

Some cars (eg. sport cars) have very high compression ratios (they sqeeze more air/fuel before burning).  Using premium gas is important to prevent knocking and maintain engine performance.

If your car does require premium gas, there should be a notice on the gas cap or in  your owners manual.

Remember, it's a waste of money if use premium if you car is designed to run on just regular gas.
